The decision is made.

We got the last of the contractors prices and have decided to be our own general contractor. The fun begins!!!
Met a guy at the lot today for a quote on the first excavation. Turns out we have mutual friends. He seems like a good guy so we told him we would go with him. He is being very helpful with other questions we have and has given us great help with this whole house building exercise.

Still waiting.

Another week goes by with no progress. We have demolished the wooden garden shed and removed excess brush from the property. We are still awaiting prices from contractors, excavators, painters and tapers.
Hubby still is not working and will have next week off too.

We pretty much have decided to be our own general contractors. We crunched the numbers and employing a general bites into our funds too much.So unless the quotes, we are still waiting for, are minimal it looks like we are on our way!
The guy that did all the metal work on hubby's '38 Ford has asked if he can take the bare metal car to a Show and Shine in August. He is using it for advertising.
Unfortunately we built our metal shed in front of the garage door that the car is behind! So.... we are in the process of demolishing the wooden shed in the back, right corner of the lot and we will move the metal one and its contents down there.

Finally some progress.

We received some of the quotes today, a couple of excavation people, a plumber and a heating guy. We also stopped by Harbour City Kitchens and left him with plans for the kitchen and tentative for the bathrooms.

We spent a lovely time on Island View Beach , walking then just sat and enjoyed the day.

Sit around and wait.

This week we have been giving out plans to trades and are still waiting for quotes from plans already given out! We are leaning more towards being our own general contractor so have even been contacting gyproc finishers etc.
Two plumbers have replied and their prices differ by $20,000!!!
We watched Holmes on Homes tonight and get the shakes watching these poor people with their contractor woes, sure hope we don't have any problems.

I am having a problem with Blogger in that the picture looks fine when editing but when I look at the blog after the picture is not what I want! At least this little picture shows the blank lot.

Sewer is in, decisions to be made.

Yesterday we met with a plumber at the lot. Central Saanich appears to have finished the sewer part of the project and didn't have to disrupt the garden shed and cement.

We are still waiting for the final couple of prices from builders but are now re-thinking the being our own general contractors idea. We were originally doing this until I read the criteria and we would have to live in the home a year and we have to hold a 10 year warranty. We wanted the option of maybe selling this house sooner than a year and the warranty idea scared me. We have spoken with some people and very often the house does get sold within the year for various reasons....someone makes you an offer you can't refuse, you realize you don't like stairs, the house is too large etc.The warranty concern was eased as Pacific homes has a warranty and most of the trades will cover their problems too for good faith and future referrals.

A Big Hole!

Central Saanich started the work on our sewer. There is now a 10ftby6ft hole on Peden Lane and it is about 5ft deep. They will end up putting a man-hole there.

What will this week bring?

Hopefully the last two quotes for assembling the house,Central Saanich finishing the sewer upgrade, getting prices for heating, kitchen cabinets, painting and hopefully Hubby getting a job!

We had our 11th wedding anniversary this week-end and it coincided with a BBQ with friends so was a special evening. Hubby has taken a lay-off from his work with hopes to be hired quickly by the hospital electrical construction department, I am a bit concerned with this decision at this time but only time will tell.
